With the very strong statement of support from the Presbyteral (Priests') Council for His Eminence, Cardinal Edward Egan, one could not but wonder what would happen to those who wrote the document that sharply criticized the Archbishop and to those who publicly commented unwisely in a situation such as arose in the Archdiocese of New York over the weekend. Well, it was announced by one of the Cardinal's regional vicars, that he had resigned the position. Furthermore his public statement was posted in Whispers In The Loggia and is copied here:
"I write to you with sincere regret for my careless and ill-considered comments," he wrote. "At a time that I should have been blessed with wisdom, I was foolish."As a Jesuit of some 26 years, there was one fact of life we learned: don't get involved in another person's battle unless you know absolutely that what you might say is without any doubt correct. But, this can be said as well: The good Monsignor had the courage to admit his fault publicly. And being a priest with some humor, I wonder what the penance was!!!
