This evening, during his homily, Fr. George Stewart -- pictured here speaking following Mass -- explained the beginning day for Our Lady of Victory. Why at Little Flower Parish where Fr. Stewart is one of the Associate Pastors? The cornerstone from the Church of St. Agnes ... which became Our Lady of Victory ... is located on the grounds of Little Flower Parish. On October 7, 1906, then Auxiliary Bishop Alfred Curtis, represented James Cardinal Gibbons for the dedication of the cornerstone of the church which was names St. Agnes. Present for the dedication was Fr. Malachy Yingling, OLV's first pastor. He was pastor at St. Agnes at the time of the dedication having started the mission some six months earlier. According to the Washington Post article of October 8, 1906, "With impressive ceremonies and in the presence of several thousand person the cornerstone of the new Catholic church at Glen Echo yesterday was dedicated.... The church, when completed will have cost about $2500. It is to be a one-story frame structure with a spacious auditorium." Father Yingling had been celebrating and continue to celebrate Mass in Glen Echo Hall until the building was completed.Saturday, October 07, 2006
