Standing Corrected!!!

A canon lawyer friend, a layman of unique intelligence, and a professor of recognition, apparently finds some time to read what this pastor writes. It is clear from his message to me that he has the fine mind of a canonist. I share with you the correction he made for my remarks about celebrating Masses each week on Sunday for the parishioners. I read it with a large smile. At least now I know more about his mind than I did before. It is interesting in two ways: (1) in the USA we do not celebrate a "pro populo" on holy days. Apparently in the canonist's homeland this must be the practice. (2) Interesting as well is the clear presentation of a mind that distinguishes very carefully. Thanks to my friend for clarifying the matter for me. Here is his professional reply to me. Enjoy! It is produced in red to recognize the academic regalia color assigned to canon law.

As you can imagine, I was delighted that you referred to canon law on your blogspot. However, you will not be surprised that canon lawyers -among them, also yours truly- always seek for precision. You write that "each Pastor is required by Canon Law to offer one Mass each week for the people of the Parish". That is correct, and yet, not exactly: a pastor is obliged to offer one Mass for the people entrusted to him on each Sunday and holy day of obligation in his diocese. It is thus not entirely correct to say that each pastor is required by canon law to offer one Mass each week for the people, because that gives the impression that such a mass can be offered any day. The idea -the ratio legis- is that it should be done on each Sunday, and also on each holy day of obligation, because that[they] are, in particular, important moments in the life of the parish. As you can see, even canon lawyers read your blogspot.
